The final few days and thoughts of the trip

1st August 2014

Arrival at the Thai border.

The Thai customs would only give us 30 days for Plodd to stay in the country, but did say that the customs in Chonburi may be able to extend this when we get home (so fingers crossed). We left the border and I went to look to buy car insurance for Plodd, I found an insurance company and they messed me about taking pictures of Plodd then telling me that the minimum time they could cover was 12 months. I explained to them that Plodd could only stay in Thailand 30 days, anyway after about 1 hour and 30 min I left and walked back to the border to speak to the customs officer that released Plodd. I soon found him and he told me I could buy Government car insurance at the customs kiosk number 7. I looked around and found the queue was about 20 to 25 people long, so I stood there thinking, then another customs officer came to me to ask if I had a problem. I explained that we had now been in Thailand 2 hours and still did not have insurance, he took my documents and handed them to the officer selling insurance and they processed it before everyone in the queue! I walked back to Plodd and we were on our way to Khon Kaen, 3 hours drive. We arrived at the best hotel in Essan The Pullman. After checking in I went across the road to Duncan’s bar where he was sitting with his mates they all wandered across to have a look around Plodd then after sorting out our Sim cards at the shop I went back to our room. We had dinner in the hotels restaurant.

On Saturday we went to the central shopping mall spent a few hours in there and then stayed at the pool for the rest of the day.

We decided that the buffet the night before was that good we would eat in the hotel restaurant again that night.

3rd August 2014

We got up early and set off for home at 8am keeping to the motorways to give us a chance of getting there in one day. We managed to make good time and arrived home about 3pm (15.00). Mark was there waiting to hand over everything before he left to go to his new apartment.

We gave our good friends Ray and Darrel a call to ask where they were going for dinner and we decided to go to John and Vals restaurant on Threppasit road “Maggs,” we had a great meal and John presented us with a bottle of Champagne which we all had a glass or two of before leaving to go to the Boon Bar (our favorite little bar) down by the Asia hotel.

Well it is all over;

We have done what we set out to do, a lot of people thought we may not achieve it, there was some friends that thought Les would jump ship at the first airport and there was times that we both thought good God today has been hard and others where we thought we must be crazy doing the trip, (mountains in China for one example) but we have now something to really talk about together and with others, like the eggs in Albania, the mountains in China, crossing the tallest bridge in the world, but most of all it has been the people we met on our way, family in Hungary, staff in hotels and campsites, the present from Vladimir in Bulgaria a pot carafe, the kids camping (not really kids but nice people)on the campsite “S” in Romania, our very special guide (Spring) and the other people we crossed China with, the girl selling CD/DVDS (Elaina) and her husband Victor in Russia, the guys in many of the Russian truck stops, the waitress in the restaurant in Mongolia that took our washing home with her and brought it back washed, this is just a few quick thoughts as I am typing and there are many many more people, this has been one fantastic trip.
